Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed is an invasive species.

Originally introduced to the UK by the Victorians, it has spread rapidly and today is regulated by extensive legislation covering its control, handling and disposal.

Landowners that allow Japanese Knotweed to spread to neighbouring sites may be liable for damages and planning permission may be refused on infested sites unless an effective control programme is in place.

There are many methods of controlling it but its permanent eradication cannot be guaranteed, as it can lie dormant in the ground for many years.

The duty of care in these cases lies with the landowner.
